Crime.

Currently, Alaska is considered the most violent state in the union.

Lately, it doesn’t feel like the streets in Anchorage are safe. Sometimes despair can rise in us so strong we don’t see a way for change to come. Yet the church in Alaska is beginning to unite in search of justice.

Worship + Justice Movement is a new organization whose goal is to bring the church together to stand against the rise of violence in our state. They exist to pray for regional and statewide breakthrough in the areas where people are most vulnerable.

I recently met Melissa Burke, founder of Worship + Justice Movement, at a worship night in Peters Creek. She told me a bit of the vision God had impressed on her heart to bring healing to our state. They plan to not only gather intercessors who will stand against crime, but to also highlight different humanitarian groups and ministries who are the boots on the ground. We are called to love the poor and oppressed, not only with prayer on our lips, but with tangible help in our hands.

16 And Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke Chapter 4)
